How to write a housekeeper CV

A good housekeeper CV helps an employer picture the setting you have worked in and the standard of work they can expect. Preparing rooms for hotel arrivals, looking after a family’s home and cleaning around care-home residents involve different routines. The strongest examples make those differences visible.

Start with the practical work you know well: the rooms and areas you look after, the cleaning and laundry responsibilities you carry, and the way you organise your shift. Then add evidence of reliability, good communication and improvements you have made. Small, specific examples often say more than a long list of personal qualities.

Match your experience to the housekeeping setting

Hotel housekeeping and room attendant roles

Give the type and size of the hotel, followed by your own allocation or responsibilities. This helps an employer distinguish experience in a small guesthouse from work across several floors of a larger hotel. Identify the mix of departure rooms, stay-over service, public areas, evening service and deep cleaning where relevant.

Explain how your work connects with room readiness. Updating a room list, reporting a maintenance problem and agreeing priorities with reception are all useful evidence. A hotel needs rooms to be clean, checked and available at the right time; your CV can show how you contribute to that sequence.

For a luxury property, give space to the detail behind presentation and guest service. This could include preparing rooms for particular requests, caring for delicate finishes, arranging extra bedding or handling guest laundry. For a larger operation, allocation, consistency and communication across the team may be more central. Choose the experience that fits the employer’s rooms and service model.

Private-household housekeeping

Describe the household through its size and working arrangements. The number of bedrooms or storeys, whether you worked alone or alongside another housekeeper, and the amount of laundry or wardrobe care can help a recruiter understand the role. A clear description such as “sole housekeeper for a five-bedroom family home” is useful even when the employer’s name is kept private.

Separate regular housekeeping from additional duties. Laundry, ironing, wardrobe organisation, arranging dry cleaning, accepting deliveries and liaising with tradespeople may be a substantial part of your work. Cooking, errands, pet care or travel between residences can also be relevant when the vacancy includes them. Give each responsibility the emphasis it deserves for the particular household.

Discretion and initiative are easier to understand through examples of trusted responsibilities. Keyholding, working while the household is away, keeping track of specialist cleaning arrangements or preparing the home for a return visit all give useful context. The CV should explain the work without needing to reveal personal details about the family.

Care-home and healthcare housekeeping

Bring out experience of working in occupied spaces and coordinating with the people using them. In a care home, that may mean planning room cleaning around residents’ routines, respecting personal belongings and communicating courteously with residents, relatives and care colleagues.

Include relevant infection prevention, cleaning-record or laundry procedures from your role, together with recent workplace training. Explain your contribution to keeping the environment clean and comfortable. Where your job also included duties outside housekeeping, identify those separately so the employer can see the scope of each part.

Read the duties as well as the title. Some employers use “housekeeper” for a broader ward or facilities support role, while others focus on domestic cleaning. The application is stronger when its leading examples match the particular job description.

Turn everyday duties into useful evidence

Begin each recent job with a short description of the workplace and your responsibilities. Use the remaining space for examples that show how you organise the work, maintain standards or support the people around you.

For example, “cleaned rooms” identifies a task. “Prepared departure and stay-over rooms, recorded room status and passed maintenance issues to reception before arrivals” shows a complete contribution to the hotel’s daily operation. It explains both the cleaning and the communication involved.

Choose examples from several parts of the job, rather than describing the same room-cleaning routine repeatedly. Your evidence might cover:

  • Presentation: final room checks, replenishment, bed presentation and attention to details noticed during inspections.
  • Organisation: preparing the trolley, sequencing an allocation, responding to changed arrival priorities and completing the handover.
  • Care of the property: reporting damage, spotting a recurring fault or arranging the right follow-up for an item needing specialist attention.
  • Linen and supplies: checking deliveries, recording shortages, separating damaged items and keeping stock ready for the next shift.
  • Service: responding to requests, agreeing a suitable time to return to an occupied room and passing unresolved matters to the right colleague.

You can make independent working visible in the same way. Explain the area you were responsible for, how you planned the work and how you communicated anything outside your usual remit. This gives an employer something more substantial than “able to work without supervision”.

Use workload figures and achievements in context

Numbers can help explain the scale of housekeeping work. Useful examples include the size of the property, the number of rooms in your allocation, the team you supported or the number of new starters you helped. Give the setting alongside the number.

The example CV describes a mix of 12–14 departure and stay-over rooms on a typical full shift. That is information about Sarah’s experience, rather than a general benchmark for housekeepers. Room size, service level, occupancy and the mix of tasks all affect what an allocation involves. A recruiter can make better use of the figure when those conditions are clear.

Achievements may be practical improvements that made work more consistent. A reorganised linen cupboard, a clearer stock check, a better handover sheet or support for a new colleague can all be worth including. Explain the action and the effect. In this CV, labelled shelves and an end-of-shift count helped reduce emergency linen requests during a six-week team trial.

If your employer records inspection results, re-cleans, guest feedback or stock discrepancies, a relevant result can strengthen the application. State the period and whether it relates to your own work or a team improvement. Where no formal figures were recorded, describe the useful outcome in words: colleagues could locate supplies more easily, a recurring fault was resolved, or a new starter became confident with the room-check routine.

Present cleaning knowledge, equipment and training together

A skills section is most useful when it describes the work you can undertake. Group related experience: guest rooms and bathrooms; public areas and floors; laundry and garment care; stock and room checks. Give greater detail to a specialist area when the vacancy depends on it.

Name equipment or systems where familiarity will help the employer assess your fit. Examples include carpet-extraction equipment, floor-cleaning machines, commercial laundry equipment or a hotel’s room-status system. Explain the application briefly. A short description of recording room status and reporting faults is more informative than a software name on its own.

For private homes, experience with particular fabrics, finishes or wardrobe requirements may be especially useful. Identify the materials and responsibilities relevant to the role, such as handling delicate garments, organising dry-cleaning collections or coordinating specialist carpet cleaning. The CV needs to establish your experience; the employer’s preferred methods can be discussed at interview.

List relevant training with the provider or employer and completion date. COSHH awareness, manual handling, fire safety, infection prevention, laundry procedures and room inspection training can all support an application where they relate to the duties. A workplace course can sit under “Training” or “Training and education”; an awarded qualification can be listed separately with its full title.

For an experienced housekeeper, recent practical training often deserves more space than a detailed list of school subjects. For an entry applicant, education and other experience can help show a foundation for learning the employer’s routines.

Show the people side of housekeeping

Housekeepers often notice a request or a problem before anyone else. Use your CV to show that you respond courteously and pass information on clearly. The best examples usually come from ordinary work: arranging a return visit around a guest’s plans, helping a resident find an item or making sure maintenance knows which room needs attention.

Teamwork also has a practical form. You may have helped a colleague with a late departure, coordinated linen deliveries, supported a deep clean or prepared an area before an event. Explain your part and the reason the coordination mattered.

When applying for a senior housekeeper or supervisor role, add the responsibilities that distinguish supervision from experienced individual work. These can include allocating rooms, checking completed work, planning cover, monitoring stock, coaching new starters and following up problems. Give the number of colleagues or area covered and describe how you maintained standards while still contributing to the cleaning.

A housekeeper applying for their first supervisory role can use buddying, inspection cover or responsibility for part of a shift as evidence of readiness. The example CV’s new-starter support is one such step, while keeping Sarah’s current role clearly hands-on.

Build a first housekeeping CV from relevant experience

Some housekeeping roles provide full training and welcome applicants without hotel experience. Start with the work that shows you can follow a routine, keep an area clean, manage time and work considerately around other people.

Office or school cleaning, laundry work, catering, shop work and volunteering can provide useful examples. Explain the connection through the tasks: cleaning shared spaces, replenishing supplies, checking a work area before opening, helping visitors or completing a shift handover. The school-cleaning role in this example establishes a foundation in cleaning schedules, equipment care and reporting hazards.

For a first paid role, practical experience from caring responsibilities or regular voluntary work can sit under a clearly named section such as “Relevant experience”. Describe the responsibilities and routines that matter for the vacancy. Recent training, a work placement or a referee familiar with your reliability can add further support.

If you are deciding between housekeeping and a front-desk position, the receptionist CV example shows how the emphasis changes towards enquiries, bookings and reception systems. Keep the leading evidence in each application aligned with the work you want to do.

Make your work pattern and employment history easy to understand

Use dates and short labels to make part-time, seasonal and temporary work clear. A seasonal hotel contract or a series of agency assignments can demonstrate useful experience across different properties. Where several assignments were similar, group them under the agency and give the main settings and responsibilities.

If you worked for several households at the same time, say so and show the overall period. The reader can then understand overlapping dates as a regular working arrangement. Give more space to the most relevant or recent role and use shorter entries for similar earlier work.

Practical availability can matter for early starts, weekend rotas or travel between properties. A short additional information line can state your base, available work pattern and relevant transport arrangements. This helps the employer assess the fit while leaving the main CV for your housekeeping experience and standards.

Housekeeper CV FAQs

How should I name a private-household employer on my CV?

A description such as ‘Private household, York’ can work well, followed by the dates, property size and your responsibilities. If a recruitment agency placed you, you can name the agency where useful. The role remains understandable without publishing the family’s name or address. Detailed employment verification can be handled with the recruiter at the appropriate stage.

Do I need to put referees’ contact details on a housekeeper CV?

Private-household recruiters often place particular weight on references, so it helps to have suitable referees ready. Follow the application instructions about when to provide their details. Where they are requested separately, use the CV space for your work history and provide the reference information through the recruiter’s form. Agree with each referee that they are happy to be contacted, especially if you are still working for the household.

How do I explain moving from an agency assignment into a permanent hotel job?

Show the agency period and permanent employment as separate dated entries, or as two clearly labelled stages beneath the hotel name. Include the agency’s name for the assignment and the hotel as the workplace. If the work continued without a gap, the dates can make that continuity clear. Moving into a permanent role is also a useful indication that the employer wanted to retain you.

What should I include when applying for a live-in housekeeper role?

State that you are seeking or available for live-in work and give a practical start date or notice period where useful. Bring forward experience of looking after a property independently, supporting household routines and travelling between residences if that is part of the vacancy. The details of accommodation, working hours and any arrangements involving a partner or pet are usually best discussed directly with the recruiter or household.

Are photographs of rooms useful in a housekeeping application?

Most hotel and care-home applications can be assessed from the CV, references and interview. For a private-household or specialist presentation role, a recruiter may ask for a small portfolio. If so, agree what material can be shared and choose images that show the relevant standard of work without identifying the property or its occupants. A clear description of your responsibilities is still useful when photographs are not available.

How should I approach a combined housekeeper and nanny vacancy?

Make the two parts of your experience easy to assess. Give housekeeping and childcare their own examples, with the children’s age ranges and the responsibilities you held where relevant. Some combined roles involve occasional school collection; others include substantial sole-charge care. The advertised balance should determine the emphasis of the CV and which training or references you bring forward.
