How to write an ERP implementation consultant CV

An ERP implementation CV has to answer two questions quickly: which business problems can you handle, and how far can you take the client through delivery? “ERP experience” leaves too much open. A recruiter needs to distinguish a finance specialist who configures Business Central from a NetSuite developer, a manufacturing consultant or an internal super-user moving into consultancy. Put your platform, functional specialism and delivery experience near the top, then use selected implementations to show the detail.

Define your consulting specialism in the opening profile

Build the profile around the combination you offer: platform, modules or business processes, client environment and level of responsibility. “Business Central functional consultant specialising in finance and purchasing for distribution businesses” gives the reader a useful starting point. Follow it with evidence of your stage of career, such as leading a finance workstream, delivering smaller implementations independently or supporting a senior consultant through testing and training.

The distinction between functional, technical and techno-functional consulting is useful here. A functional applicant can lead workshops, configure the application and specify extensions while a developer builds them. A technical applicant might emphasise integrations, custom development and deployment. If you cover both, choose one project that demonstrates that combination rather than relying on the label alone.

For an in-house role, emphasise how well you understand the organisation’s processes and users. For a partner or consultancy, client delivery, changing project contexts and commercial awareness deserve more space. An applicant moving from internal systems work can make that transition explicit in one sentence.

Make platform knowledge easy to assess

A short skills section works well when it groups related capabilities instead of mixing every product and delivery term together. Give the reader enough precision to see where your experience fits:

  • Platform and deployment: for example, Business Central online, earlier Dynamics NAV implementations, NetSuite or Sage Intacct.
  • Functional coverage: finance, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, projects or another relevant area, with the processes you have configured.
  • Delivery tools: the tools you use for data preparation, requirements, testing or reporting, connected to their purpose.
  • Technical collaboration: functional specifications, interface mapping, extension testing or report requirements, with your own involvement identified.

Versions become worth including when they explain a migration, an upgrade or compatibility with the employer’s environment. An exhaustive version history can sit in a separate project record. On the CV, “NAV to Business Central migration: finance and purchasing workstream” is more informative than a string of release numbers.

Process knowledge travels between platforms. Purchase-to-pay, order-to-cash, month-end, stock control and project accounting can make previous experience relevant to a new ERP environment. Pair those terms with the work you did: approval design, posting setup, reconciliation, fulfilment requirements or reporting. This gives a hiring manager something concrete to assess alongside product familiarity.

Use a few implementation examples to explain your contribution

Under each employer, start with the overall remit and then give the most relevant projects enough space to be understood. A useful project entry identifies the client’s sector, scale, platform, modules, delivery stage and your responsibility. For example, a two-company finance rollout tells the reader more than “large implementation”, especially when followed by the decisions and deliverables you owned.

Choose projects for the evidence they add. One might show discovery and configuration; another may demonstrate a difficult migration, a phased rollout or a change in industry. Several nearly identical project descriptions use space without widening the picture. Earlier implementations can be summarised in a short line stating their number, platform and scope.

Make leadership specific. Leading a finance workstream, managing the implementation plan and designing the overall solution are different contributions, each valuable. Name the part you led and the colleagues or client owners you worked with. For senior applications, add evidence of reviewing other consultants’ designs, mentoring colleagues, estimating work or handling decisions that affected scope and delivery.

If your role centres on requirements and process analysis, the business analyst CV example offers another way to organise that evidence. Keep the ERP CV’s project detail focused on how those requirements became a working system.

Show what came out of discovery and configuration

“Ran workshops” describes an activity. The useful CV evidence is what the workshops resolved: competing approval requirements, inconsistent account structures, a gap in stock visibility or different processes across acquired businesses. Explain the decision or deliverable that followed, such as an agreed process map, a configuration design or a prioritised list of extensions.

Fit-gap work is particularly helpful when it shows judgement. You might have demonstrated a standard workflow that met a requirement, compared configuration options with a finance lead or documented the business case for an extension. A concise bullet can show that you understand both the application and the consequences for the client.

Configuration details should be selective. For a finance vacancy, dimensions, posting arrangements, approvals and reporting structures may deserve attention. For a distribution role, purchasing, inventory, locations and fulfilment processes may carry more weight. Use the module names and terminology relevant to your own platform, then explain why the work mattered.

Give migration and testing proper visibility

Data migration often contains some of the strongest evidence on an implementation CV. State the data involved, your responsibility and how readiness was established. Preparing supplier records, mapping historical transactions and reconciling opening balances describe different levels of work. Record counts help establish scale, while exception resolution and reconciliation explain quality.

For example, a bullet about validating 6,200 item records becomes useful when it identifies the duplicate references and unit-of-measure exceptions resolved with data owners. If technical colleagues performed the load, your mapping, preparation and validation remain substantial contributions. Name that part clearly. Excel, Power Query or SQL then appear in a meaningful delivery context.

Testing evidence should connect to business acceptance. Relevant details include the processes covered by UAT, how you developed scenarios with users, the defects you coordinated and the evidence supplied for acceptance reviews. “Supported UAT” can become “coordinated finance scenarios covering invoice approval, payment and month-end reporting, with defects tracked through retesting”. The latter helps a reader understand the work without turning the CV into a test plan.

Carry the project story through go-live and adoption

Go-live is a useful milestone, but an implementation CV is stronger when it explains how the transition was managed. Include the cutover activities you owned: final data checks, balance reconciliation, business readiness, user access, training or the handling of outstanding issues. A phased rollout may give you several distinct transitions to draw on.

Training deserves more than a headcount. State which user groups you trained and what they needed to do in the system. Training buyers on purchasing workflows differs from preparing finance key users to support a month-end close. Role-based guides, train-the-trainer sessions and support handovers are useful evidence when linked to the adoption problem they addressed.

Hypercare and ongoing support can show how well the solution worked in practice. Explain how you prioritised issues with business owners, resolved recurring process questions or transferred knowledge to the support team. If you subsequently improved reporting or workflows, distinguish that optimisation work from the initial implementation so the chronology remains clear.

Choose results that reflect the work you delivered

Operational improvements often make better achievements than a general claim of successful transformation. Useful results might include less manual reconciliation, a shorter reporting task, fewer recurring posting errors, a completed rollout to additional entities or acceptance of a previously blocked process. Give the starting point and comparison period when they are needed to understand the result.

Project scope and outcomes serve different purposes. Twenty-two users trained describes reach; a fall in repeat support queries after the training describes an effect. A completed migration can be presented through accepted balances, reconciled records and readiness for the agreed cutover. Where benefits are measured later by the client, use the delivery evidence available to you.

For consultancy roles, commercial contributions can also earn space: estimating a workstream, defining change requests, supporting a demonstration or helping the project manager resolve scope questions. Explain your contribution and its practical consequence. Billable utilisation is most useful where it demonstrates delivery capacity alongside quality, rather than standing alone as the main achievement.

Present qualifications and the route into consultancy

List a relevant vendor credential using its full title, with the award or latest renewal date where applicable. Place it prominently when the vacancy names that certification. A course, an exam in progress and an awarded certification can each have a place; label the stage so the reader can see your development trajectory. Degrees and accounting or industry qualifications are useful when they support your functional specialism.

Someone entering consulting from finance, operations or an internal systems team should give project involvement more space than routine transactions. User acceptance testing, master-data preparation, process mapping, supplier liaison and super-user training can provide the bridge. Keep the original job title, then explain the implementation responsibility beneath it.

For an experienced consultant, education usually takes less space than delivery. Use that space for a relevant implementation, a more complex business process or evidence of greater responsibility. If you are moving into project management, the project manager CV example can help you decide which planning and governance responsibilities deserve their own evidence.

ERP Implementation Consultant CV FAQs

How should I list several client implementations under one consulting employer?

Keep the consulting employer and employment dates as the main entry. Beneath it, use short project subheadings for two or three implementations relevant to the vacancy, showing sector, platform, scope and your role. Summarise the remainder in one line. For contract applications that need a fuller project history, a separate project sheet can supply dates and module detail without making the main CV difficult to scan.

Can I apply for another ERP platform when my experience is on Business Central, NetSuite or Sage?

Cross-platform applications are strongest where your functional knowledge matches the target role. Describe the business processes and implementation stages you know, then identify the training or practical exposure you have gained on the new platform. Put your established product expertise and newer learning in separate phrases. This lets a consultancy assess both your immediate contribution and the product training you may need.

What should I put on my CV if my first implementation has not gone live yet?

State the current project stage and describe completed deliverables: agreed requirements, configuration reviews, prepared migration data, tested scenarios or completed user training. An implementation in UAT can still demonstrate substantial experience. Add the planned next stage if it helps explain your remit, while giving completed work the main emphasis.

How can I describe client projects covered by confidentiality agreements?

Use the detail that can be shared: industry, approximate scale, geography, platform, modules and your responsibilities. A description such as a UK distribution group with three trading entities usually gives useful context without naming the client. Your decisions, deliverables and collaboration can carry the example even where commercial values or operational results are confidential.

Does ERP support experience count towards an implementation consultant application?

It can be a strong foundation when you show work that connects support to delivery. Examples include analysing recurring issues, gathering change requirements, configuring improvements, testing releases and training users. Separate ordinary incident handling from project or enhancement work so the reader can see where you already have implementation-related experience. A support-to-consulting application benefits from one developed change example more than a long list of ticket categories.

Should I include a portfolio or sample project documents?

A portfolio is optional for ERP consulting. It is most useful for an early-career applicant who can show a concise process map, requirements-to-test example or training extract from a personal practice project. Experienced applicants can usually demonstrate more through selected delivery examples on the CV. Keep any sample short enough to discuss at interview, with a note explaining the problem, your contribution and the intended audience.
