FAQs

Should I tailor my paralegal CV to a particular area of law?

Yes. If the vacancy is for a particular department, give the most space to experience that is relevant to that practice area. For example, a conveyancing role may warrant more detail about property transactions, searches and post-completion work, while a family role may place greater emphasis on client contact, drafting and managing sensitive matters. Less relevant experience can still be included, but it does not need the same level of detail.

How can I describe my caseload without revealing confidential information?

Focus on the type, volume and complexity of work rather than identifiable client details. You might explain that you managed a mixed caseload, handled matters from instruction to completion, worked to court or transaction deadlines, or assisted with a particular category of case. Never include client names or confidential facts simply to make an achievement sound more impressive.

Should I include legal software and case management systems on my CV?

Yes, where they are relevant to the vacancy. Experience with case management, document management, legal research, time recording or other specialist systems can be useful evidence that you will require less training. Name systems you have genuinely used rather than creating a long generic software list.

What if I want to move into a different area of law?

Emphasise the legal skills that transfer between departments. These might include taking instructions, legal research, drafting, file management, client care, working to deadlines and handling a caseload. You can then use your personal profile or covering letter to explain briefly why you are interested in moving into the new practice area.

Should I include an unfinished law degree or professional qualification?

Yes. Make it clear that the qualification is still in progress and give an expected completion date where you know it. Relevant modules can be worth mentioning, particularly if they relate directly to the role you are applying for. Avoid presenting an incomplete qualification in a way that could suggest it has already been awarded.

Are figures and achievements useful on a paralegal CV?

They can be, provided the figures are accurate and appropriate to disclose. For example, you may be able to quantify the size of a caseload, the number of matters handled, billing or fee-earning responsibilities, or improvements you made to a process. Specific evidence is usually more persuasive than simply describing yourself as organised, efficient or hardworking.

Should I list every legal task I have ever performed?

No. A long inventory of routine duties can obscure the experience that makes you a strong candidate. Prioritise the work that demonstrates your level of responsibility, the types of matters you understand and the skills requested in the vacancy. You can usually omit basic administrative tasks if you already have stronger legal experience to show.
