How to write a credit controller CV

A credit controller CV should show how you turn an outstanding balance into a clear action and, ultimately, a resolved account. Employers need to understand the ledger you handle, your collection experience and how you work through the queries or commercial decisions that hold up payment. Strong results matter, but the context behind them makes the difference between a useful achievement and an isolated number.

Give the reader a clear picture of your ledger

Start with the type of customers and the scale of your responsibility. A portfolio of independent trade customers, a small number of large corporate accounts and a consumer arrears book involve different work. State the approximate number of active accounts, average outstanding balance, payment terms or geographical coverage where they help explain your experience.

Describe the balance precisely. “£2.4 million average outstanding sales ledger” tells the reader something different from annual sales, monthly invoicing or cash collected. If you share a ledger, explain your allocation, such as a region, customer group or ageing band. That makes your level of ownership easy to assess.

Your profile can then bring together the most relevant features: B2B or consumer collections, sector experience, systems and one or two strengths supported later in the CV. For a trade distributor, those might be disputed deliveries and order holds. For a law firm, they may be working with fee earners and resolving client billing queries.

Build collection achievements around a meaningful comparison

The most useful credit-control measures include overdue balances, aged debt bands, debtor days, cash against target, kept payment commitments and disputed amounts. Choose figures that reflect your own portfolio or clearly identified contribution to the team. Include the starting point, end point and period.

For example, “Reduced balances more than 60 days overdue from £286,000 to £174,000 over six months” is stronger when the reader also knows whether the ledger grew, shrank or remained broadly stable. A fall in overdue debt after a large account left the business means something different from improved payment performance across a continuing customer base.

Connect the result to your work: prioritising high-value overdue accounts, agreeing dated payment commitments, clearing invoice disputes or involving account managers earlier. A short explanation shows an employer how you achieved the change and where that experience would transfer.

Distinguish money received from other movements in the ledger. Cash collected, credits approved, balances written off and receipts reallocated are different outcomes. Each can represent useful work. “Resolved £68,000 of disputed invoices for payment” accurately describes a successful query exercise; “collected £68,000” describes receipt of the money. Choose the measure that fits the event.

Debtor days or days sales outstanding can add value when used by your employer, particularly in a senior application. Give the business or portfolio scope and comparison period. If your strongest evidence is an aged-debt reduction or a particular recovery, use that rather than forcing every achievement into the same metric.

Show what you do when an invoice is disputed

Query resolution often explains why a credit controller succeeds. Include a specific type of problem and the information or people you brought together to resolve it. This could involve missing purchase orders, price differences, proof of delivery, returns, duplicate invoices, contract rates or client approval processes.

A useful bullet might describe reconciling an account against remittances and approved credits, agreeing the remaining disputed items with the customer and obtaining a payment date for the undisputed balance. Another might show how a recurring billing problem was resolved with sales or operations so fewer invoices became overdue.

Give the reader enough detail to see the investigation, without turning the CV into an account history. The obstacle, your action and the result usually fit into one or two lines. For a senior role, include examples where you coordinated several teams or resolved a long-standing dispute that routine reminders had not shifted.

Present collection conversations as a practical skill

Telephone and email experience are worth mentioning, but volume alone says little about effectiveness. Show how you establish the reason for non-payment, agree a next step, record the commitment and follow up. Experience handling difficult conversations can be expressed through a resolved dispute, a sustainable arrangement or a clear escalation.

In commercial collections, maintaining a working relationship with the customer may involve their accounts payable team, buyer and your own account manager. In consumer collections, examples may involve customers in financial difficulty, additional support needs or liaison with a specialist team. Match the evidence to the environment of the vacancy.

Where you agree payment arrangements, explain your responsibility and the outcome you monitor. If arrangements require approval, “prepared and monitored payment proposals agreed by the credit manager” shows a clear contribution. Good record keeping and effective handovers are especially valuable where another colleague may handle the next contact.

Make credit decisions and commercial coordination visible

Credit control can involve balancing collection risk with continued trading. Describe any work with credit-reference information, new account applications, limit reviews, accounts on stop or orders awaiting release. State whether you make decisions within an agreed authority, recommend a change or refer exceptions to a manager.

Order-hold experience is particularly relevant in manufacturing, wholesale and distribution. A short example can show how you reconciled the account, confirmed a payment or obtained the required approval before a despatch deadline. That demonstrates commercial awareness more effectively than using the phrase on its own.

If you work with solicitors, debt recovery agencies or insolvency practitioners, explain the part you handle: assembling the account chronology, checking supporting documents, referring cases, monitoring progress or updating the ledger. Legal recovery is one aspect of the role; the CV should establish your experience without becoming a guide to the process.

Connect systems and Excel with the information you produce

Name the finance or collections systems you use, such as SAP, Dynamics, Sage, Oracle, HighRadius or Elite 3E, when they are relevant to your experience. Add the tasks you carry out: cash allocation, collections notes, dunning runs, dispute tracking, account maintenance or reporting. Employers can then see how familiar you are with the workflow behind the software name.

For Excel, describe the application of the skill. Lookups may support matching invoice and remittance data; PivotTables may show ageing by customer or salesperson; SUMIFS may help analyse disputed balances. A report used in a weekly cash meeting is stronger evidence than a long list of functions.

Cash forecasting also deserves context. Explain the period you forecast, the accounts covered and how you distinguish confirmed payments from uncertain receipts. If you improved a report or tracker, give the effect on follow-up, visibility or preparation time. A small, well-used improvement can be a convincing achievement.

Adapt the evidence to the credit environment

  • Trade and manufacturing: highlight customer terms, order holds, returns, delivery evidence, pricing disputes and coordination with sales or operations.
  • Professional services: show work with partners, fee earners or account owners, client billing requirements, matter or project queries and cross-border relationships where applicable.
  • Consumer collections: bring out arrears experience, customer support, arrangement monitoring, case notes, quality reviews and relevant regulatory training.
  • International portfolios: identify countries, currencies, languages and the practical collection or reconciliation issues you manage.

A sector move does not mean starting the CV again. Retain the core evidence of collections, reconciliation and query resolution, then make the most transferable features prominent. If a system or sector is new to you, examples of learning a previous platform or taking ownership of a new portfolio can help show readiness.

Show the step from support work to ownership

For an early-career applicant, relevant evidence may come from sales ledger, finance administration or customer service. Receipt matching, statement reconciliation, invoice queries and accurate follow-up notes all support a move into credit control. Give those tasks sufficient detail and include a result such as clearing unmatched receipts or resolving a backlog.

The accounts receivable clerk example is useful if much of your background is in ledger maintenance. For a credit controller application, bring collection conversations, prioritisation and responsibility for overdue accounts further forward.

Experienced applicants should show the more difficult work they now own: high-value or complex accounts, credit-risk recommendations, recovery referrals, forecasting or process improvements. For a senior controller, include coaching, quality checking or cover for the manager where these form part of the role. Keep the distinction between mentoring colleagues and managing their performance clear.

Use qualifications to support the practical evidence

CICM qualifications are directly relevant to credit and collections. Give the award’s full title, level and completion year; present current study separately, including completed units where useful. Membership and an achieved qualification can be listed separately so that each is easy to recognise.

AAT or another accounting qualification may strengthen the financial context of your application, while systems training and relevant collections development can demonstrate current capability. Experienced candidates can keep school qualifications brief. For someone entering the profession, mathematics, English, finance study and a well-chosen example of working accurately with account information deserve more space.

Choose the examples that best show you can take responsibility for the employer’s accounts. A clear ledger description, two or three meaningful outcomes and evidence of the conversations and investigation behind them will give the CV a coherent professional story.

Credit Controller CV FAQs

What can I include if my employer does not share collection targets with me?

Use measures available within your own work: an aged query backlog, reconciled accounts, kept payment commitments, unmatched receipts cleared or time taken to resolve a recurring problem. A specific account-resolution example also demonstrates skill without a target percentage. The portfolio’s size and type provide useful scale even when detailed performance figures are unavailable.

Should I call myself a credit controller or an accounts receivable specialist?

Use your employer’s title in the employment history and explain the remit underneath it. A profile can identify your credit-control experience even if the formal title is broader. For a collections-focused vacancy, lead with overdue account ownership and dispute resolution; for an accounts receivable role, allocation, reconciliation and ledger controls may deserve more space.

How should I present several short credit-control contracts?

Show the dates and contract status for each assignment, with the purpose and result: covering absence, reducing a backlog, supporting a system change or taking over a portfolio. Where assignments came through one agency, they can be grouped beneath the agency with each client sector and period identified. Keep enough detail to show the ledger and work you handled.

Is CICM study more useful on the CV than AAT?

They demonstrate different knowledge. CICM is closely connected to credit management and collections, while AAT provides broader accounting evidence. Give prominence to the qualification most relevant to the vacancy and your responsibilities. Both can sit in the same qualifications section; there is usually no need for a long explanation of the syllabus.

Can I move from consumer collections into commercial credit control?

Yes, and the CV should make the transferable evidence easy to see: structured follow-up, payment discussions, account investigation, accurate notes and prioritisation. Add any experience with invoices, reconciliations or business customers. A brief profile can explain the intended move, while the employment bullets show the practical foundation for it.

Should I include commission or bonus earnings from a collections role?

They are rarely as informative as the results that produced them. If recognition was based on a defined combination of collections and quality, describe that achievement and its period. Cash performance, customer outcomes, quality reviews and portfolio scope usually give a prospective employer a clearer picture than the value of a personal bonus.
