SELECTED WORK:

QUARTERLY RECONCILIATION IMPROVEMENT

Built a Power Query workbook to combine ledger extracts and bank data for the team’s recurring cash reconciliation. Added source totals, mapping checks and an exception tab, then tested the output against the existing process over three closes. Preparation time fell from 60 to 25 minutes per quarterly pack. Documented the steps and handed the workbook over to two colleagues; manager review remained part of the process.

AUDIT SCHEDULE COORDINATION

Coordinated the working-paper pack for the 2025 audit of two funds and four SPVs. Agreed the evidence list with the manager, linked schedules to the trial balance and maintained a shared query register. Resolved 17 first-round requests with colleagues and clients, with all agreed schedules delivered by the audit timetable. Used recurring queries to revise the following quarter’s file checklist.

How to write a fund accountant CV

A fund accountant CV should make it easy to understand the funds you work on, the reporting cycle you support and the responsibility you hold. “Prepared accounts and reconciliations” could describe many finance jobs. Your CV becomes more informative when it identifies the fund structure, accounting work, review process and stakeholders involved.

Use that context to select the technical detail. A daily-valued hedge fund role, a private-equity administrator position and an in-house real-estate fund role can share a title while requiring quite different evidence.

Define your fund experience in the opening section

State your principal asset class and fund type: private equity, private credit, real estate, infrastructure, hedge funds or another relevant area. Add whether your work involves open-ended or closed-ended funds and the main reporting frequency.

Identify the employment setting as well. Producing accounting records for several clients at an administrator is different from reviewing an external administrator’s work within an investment manager. Both are valuable; the reader needs to know which experience you bring.

Scale can help when it is labelled clearly. James’s example identifies three funds, six related SPVs and £420m of aggregate commitments. Fund commitments, net asset value and assets under management describe different measures, so use the one that actually explains your portfolio.

Fund count alone is rarely enough. A smaller number of complex structures, currencies or reporting requirements may provide stronger evidence than a large volume of straightforward entities. Give the context that makes the workload meaningful.

Explain your part in NAV production or oversight

Net asset value work is a central subject for many applications, but the phrase “NAV experience” leaves substantial questions unanswered. Describe the frequency, main inputs, work completed and review arrangement.

For production roles, relevant evidence may include ledger maintenance, accruals, investment records, cash and position reconciliations, fee calculations, investor allocations and preparation of the final pack. Select the components that show the depth of your responsibility.

For oversight roles, explain how you review an administrator’s output: investigating movements, challenging exceptions, reconciling estimates to final figures or checking the application of fund terms. Include how queries are resolved and how the review reaches the appropriate approval point.

Daily P&L and valuation work can deserve particular prominence for liquid strategies. Explain the products covered, the type of attribution or movement analysis and the information you provide to colleagues. In private markets, quarterly reporting, capital accounts and the relationship between fund and underlying-entity records may be more relevant.

Make reconciliations and controls specific

State what you reconcile and what you do with differences. Cash, positions, investment balances, investor capital and intercompany accounts involve different sources and investigation. A useful bullet connects the reconciliation with an exception you resolved or a control you improved.

James’s aged-break example gives a defined category and period: items older than 30 days reduced from 18 to seven over two quarters. The measure explains the control improvement more clearly than a broad claim about increasing accuracy.

Other useful evidence can include reducing repeated review queries, improving the traceability of a schedule, clearing a recurring mismatch or making a close checklist more reliable. Describe the cause addressed and the part you played.

For a senior role, include review and escalation responsibility. Reviewing a junior colleague’s pack, challenging an external provider and approving a release are distinct activities. Clear verbs help the employer assess the level at which you already operate.

Connect investor accounting with fund terms

For private-market roles, bring forward capital calls, distributions, investor allocations, capital-account statements and relevant fee or waterfall work. Describe whether you prepare calculations, review notices, coordinate approval, maintain records or respond to investor queries.

Show the connection to the documents that govern the work, such as partnership agreements, offering documents or agreed investor terms. The CV can explain that you apply these to a calculation or reporting schedule without becoming a guide to interpreting fund documentation.

Fund launches, subsequent closings, transfers and changes to structures can provide useful project evidence. Give the event, your accounting contribution and how you coordinated with legal, investor-services, operations or other colleagues.

Use volume or timing figures where they add context. The example’s 12 capital-call and distribution cycles establish recurring delivery, while the agreed notice dates and approval record show the operational responsibility behind the number.

Give financial reporting and audit work its own evidence

List the accounting frameworks you use in connection with actual deliverables. Preparing primary statements and notes, assembling supporting schedules and reviewing accounts from another provider demonstrate different levels of experience.

Identify relevant entity types and reporting requirements. Fund accounts, SPV accounts, consolidation packages and investor reports should be recognisable in the employment history. For real-estate applications, property-manager information, financing and transaction support may need more emphasis; for credit roles, loan activity and interest-related records may be especially relevant.

Describe audit support through what you organised or resolved. A working-paper pack, evidence request list, trial-balance mapping or query register gives substance to “liaised with auditors”. State your role in coordinating inputs and meeting the agreed timetable.

James’s selected-work section develops one audit example beyond a single bullet. It identifies two funds and four SPVs, the schedules, the query process and delivery against the timetable. That is useful supporting evidence for a candidate ready to own a larger reporting remit.

Present valuation and performance exposure at the right level

Explain whether your valuation work involves obtaining inputs, checking sources, investigating movements, preparing accounting entries, reviewing an external calculation or contributing to a valuation process. The word “valuations” can otherwise cover a very wide range of responsibility.

For performance reporting, name the measures that belong to your work and explain your contribution. Private-market applications may call for experience with IRR, multiples or investor-level reporting; liquid strategies may place more emphasis on return estimates and P&L attribution.

Connect the measure to a deliverable or query. Maintaining a reporting model, validating inputs and explaining a movement provide evidence that a list of acronyms cannot. The CV does not need a formula tutorial.

Show systems and Excel through controlled outputs

Identify the fund-accounting or portfolio platforms you use, such as eFront, Geneva or another relevant system. Add the work performed: transaction posting, report extraction, ledger review, allocation schedules or implementation testing.

For Excel, specify capabilities that you use in the role. Reconciliation formulas, PivotTables, Power Query or VBA are useful when connected to a repeatable output. A description of the source data, checks and handover helps show that an improvement can be used reliably by the team.

The example’s Power Query project records preparation time falling from 60 to 25 minutes per quarterly pack after testing over three closes. It also explains the control totals, mapping checks, exception tab and continuing manager review. This gives a recruiter a clearer picture than “automated reporting”.

System migrations and onboarding work can be equally valuable. Describe data mapping, testing, reconciliations, issue resolution or user guidance according to your contribution. Include the result, such as a completed parallel run or an adopted process.

Demonstrate communication across the reporting process

Fund accounting depends on inputs and decisions from several teams. Show how you work with fund managers, investor relations, administrators, auditors, tax advisers, banks or other relevant parties.

Use a concrete task: resolving a capital-account query, explaining a NAV movement, coordinating audit evidence or obtaining information needed for a close. This is more informative than a standalone claim of stakeholder-management skills.

For in-house roles, administrator oversight may be a major part of the job. Describe the reporting you review, the service or control issues you follow up and the way you coordinate deadlines. For administrator roles, client ownership, responsiveness and managing competing reporting calendars can be important evidence.

Make qualification status and progression clear

Give your professional body and current status, with the admission or completion date where appropriate. For ongoing study, state progress precisely and include an expected completion date if useful. Place this near the top when it is an essential part of the vacancy.

Qualified applicants can keep degree details brief and devote more space to fund responsibilities. Early-career applicants may use relevant modules, a substantial project, a placement or accounts-preparation experience to establish their foundation.

If you are moving from audit, explain the fund or investment clients, accounts, testing and issues you handled, then show how this experience supports the production or oversight work in the target role. For a move from general accounting, emphasise reconciliations, reporting, close discipline and the fund-specific knowledge you have developed.

More experienced applicants should show increasing ownership: reviewing work, coordinating a portfolio, leading a close, developing colleagues or improving the relationship with a service provider. A senior CV needs evidence of judgement and delivery beyond a longer list of accounting tasks.

Fund Accountant CV FAQs

Should I use fund commitments, NAV or AUM to describe my portfolio?

Use the measure that gives a meaningful account of the work and label it clearly. Commitments can help describe a closed-ended private-equity portfolio, while NAV or AUM may be more relevant elsewhere. Add the number of funds or entities and reporting frequency so the amount has a practical context.

Can I move from fund administration to an in-house fund accountant role?

Yes. Emphasise ownership of reporting, understanding of fund terms, investigation of exceptions and communication with clients or investment teams. An in-house role may place greater weight on administrator oversight and coordinating finance with investment activity, so choose examples that show review, judgement and follow-through as well as production.

How should I distinguish management-company accounting from fund accounting?

Label the entity and work clearly. Management-company budgeting, payroll, overheads and corporate accounts are different from fund NAVs, investor capital and fund reporting. If your role covers both, use separate bullets or short subheadings so an employer can see the balance of your experience.

Do I need experience of the exact fund-accounting system in the advert?

That depends on whether the employer treats it as essential or desirable. Name your existing platform and describe the processes you perform in it. Experience with structured accounting workflows, reconciliations, data imports and reporting can help explain what transfers to a new system; implementation or migration work is especially useful evidence.

How do I describe a confidential fund portfolio?

Use a suitable level of aggregation: strategy, broad structure, reporting cycle, number of entities and an approved scale or range. You can describe the accounting challenge and your contribution without naming the fund, investors or underlying transactions.

Should my CV include regulatory reporting acronyms?

Include the filings or reporting processes you have worked on when they are relevant to the vacancy, and say whether you prepared data, performed checks, coordinated submission or supported a review. A short explanation of your contribution makes the acronym useful to a recruiter.

What is the best way to show a temporary fund-accounting assignment?

Give the contract dates and purpose, such as audit cover, a reporting backlog, a fund launch or a systems transition. Explain the work completed and handover. Several similar assignments can be grouped under a contracting entry, with selected projects showing the strongest evidence of delivery.

How should I show ACCA study or membership status?

Use the precise stage that applies: current student progress, exams completed or affiliate status, or membership. A clear qualification entry lets the employer assess the vacancy’s requirements quickly. Membership dates can sit alongside the designation, while ongoing study can include relevant progress and planned next steps.
