How to write a paraplanner CV

A paraplanner CV should make the quality of your technical contribution visible. An employer needs to understand the cases you work on, the analysis you complete and how your work helps an adviser reach and explain a recommendation. A list of pension products and software packages gives some context; a well-chosen case or improvement shows how you use that knowledge.

Define the kind of paraplanning you do

Start with your qualification level, relevant experience and main planning areas. Then describe your place in the advice process. Preparing review packs, drafting reports from an agreed recommendation and researching alternative strategies are different contributions, and each can be valuable in the right vacancy.

An experienced profile might read: “Diploma-qualified paraplanner supporting three advisers with retirement planning, investment research and personalised suitability reports. Experienced in Voyant modelling, pension cost comparisons and discussing alternative approaches with advisers.” This gives a clearer picture than “financial services professional with excellent analytical skills”.

Include the setting where it helps: an independent practice, a restricted advice business, a national wealth manager or an outsourced paraplanning service. If your experience is concentrated in a particular client group, such as business owners approaching retirement, that can explain the depth of your work. The size of the firm matters less than your responsibilities within it.

Show what happens before the suitability report is written

Report writing is central to many paraplanning roles, but the strongest employment section also shows how you reached the drafting stage. Describe the information you evaluated, questions you resolved and comparisons you prepared. An employer can then see the thinking behind the finished document.

  • Client information: reviewing fact-finds and meeting notes, identifying gaps and reconciling inconsistent details with the adviser or administrator.
  • Existing arrangements: gathering provider evidence about charges, benefits, restrictions and investment options.
  • Options and research: comparing relevant products or approaches, recording assumptions and explaining the implications to the adviser.
  • Report preparation: connecting the agreed recommendation with the client’s objectives, circumstances, costs and relevant risks.

A useful bullet could say: “Compared existing pension charges and benefits with proposed arrangements, resolved provider discrepancies and prepared a summary of options for adviser review.” It identifies a technical task and a clear output without becoming a pension-transfer tutorial.

Make the division of work easy to follow. Phrases such as “researched and proposed options”, “drafted following adviser agreement” or “reviewed junior colleagues’ reports” show your level of responsibility more precisely than a broad claim to manage advice.

Present report writing as a communication skill

Name the reports you prepare: pension contributions, retirement income, ISA investments, portfolio changes, protection or more complex planning. Then add one detail about the quality of your writing. This could be tailoring the rationale to a client’s priorities, explaining a comparison clearly, or resolving review feedback before the case proceeds.

“Produce compliant reports” is difficult to assess on its own. A stronger description is: “Draft pension contribution and drawdown reports, translating technical research into client-specific explanations and incorporating adviser and compliance feedback.” The wording shows the subject matter, audience and review process.

If you improved report templates, say which part changed and why it helped. For example, clearer cost-comparison tables, a better record of the client’s objectives or fewer repeated requests for source information are tangible improvements. The aim is to show readable, well-supported work, not simply longer documents.

Give cashflow modelling a specific purpose

List Voyant, CashCalc, Intelliflo cashflow tools or another system alongside the modelling you actually undertake. Employers benefit from knowing whether you gather inputs, update existing plans, build models from the beginning or explore scenarios with the adviser.

Useful CV detail includes retirement-date comparisons, changing expenditure patterns, one-off commitments and different withdrawal assumptions. A concise bullet might read: “Built retirement cashflow scenarios comparing two retirement dates and alternative spending levels, with assumptions and discussion points prepared for adviser meetings.”

Distinguish a model’s purpose from a realised financial result. A forecast can help an adviser and client understand choices; it does not establish what the client’s investments subsequently earned. For a CV achievement, the useful evidence may be the number of review models completed, an inconsistency resolved or a clearer way of presenting the scenarios.

Select technical areas that establish your depth

A technical skills section can group your experience into pensions and retirement, investments and tax wrappers, protection, and specialist planning. Give greatest space to the areas that dominate the vacancy and your own recent work.

For retirement-focused roles, describe the types of pension work and retirement-income cases you support. For investment-heavy posts, research, portfolio comparisons, charges and wrapper analysis may deserve more emphasis. Trusts, estate planning, business-owner cases or specialist pension work should be connected to a relevant responsibility or case in your employment history.

Depth can be shown through a short example: the planning question, your analysis, who reviewed it and what it enabled. “Prepared a comparison of withdrawal approaches for an adviser-led retirement review, including charges, timing and the client’s stated income needs” is more useful than an unexplained list of technical abbreviations.

Keep current technical learning close to this evidence. Recent development in pension legislation or client understanding is more informative when you explain how it informed a team briefing, report review or updated research checklist. The CV needs to demonstrate applied knowledge rather than reproduce your CPD diary.

Connect each system to a recognisable task

Separate research tools, cashflow software and practice-management systems. For example, FE Analytics may support fund and portfolio analysis; Voyant supports modelling; Intelliflo Office or Xplan may hold client records, workflow and case evidence. Provider platforms and Excel can be equally relevant where they form a substantial part of your work.

Describe the task rather than assigning a vague proficiency rating. “Intelliflo Office — maintain advice files, track outstanding information and record report versions” tells an employer what you can do. If you have moved successfully between systems, a migration or training example also shows your ability to adapt.

Use results that reflect the paraplanner’s contribution

Strong paraplanning achievements often concern quality, clarity and dependable case progression. Suitable evidence includes fewer reports returned for missing information, timely completion of a review programme, quicker provider responses or a more consistent research record.

Give the period and scope. In the example CV, Olivia helped reduce reports returned for missing source information from 11 to five per quarter across the team. The measure is defined, the team contribution is clear and the result relates directly to better preparation. Her 42 cashflow-model updates describe a separate programme of work.

Report volume is most useful with context. Eight complex cases and twenty straightforward top-ups do not represent the same workload. Indicate the mix, the advisers supported and whether annual reviews sit alongside new advice. When a number is unavailable, a specific improvement to a difficult case or working practice can be stronger than a forced percentage.

Make qualifications and progression easy to understand

Use the full qualification title, awarding body and completion year. “CII Level 4 Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning, completed 2020” gives a recruiter the relevant detail immediately. Additional units such as J09 can be listed separately with their names and dates. Membership and professional designations can sit alongside the award.

For ongoing study, identify completed units and the next planned stage. An applicant with several examination passes benefits from showing that progress, particularly when it is supported by relevant case preparation at work. Different CII and CISI awards have different purposes, so the exact title is more useful than the general phrase “Level 4 qualified”.

An experienced paraplanner’s employment evidence normally deserves more space than school subjects. For a trainee, recent qualifications and relevant study may sit higher, followed by practical evidence from financial planning administration, pensions operations or another closely connected role.

Build a credible transition from administration

Focus on work that already supports technical case preparation: obtaining complete provider information, reconciling records, assembling review packs, producing calculations and following a case through to completion. Explain the additional responsibility you have taken on, such as drafting a straightforward report under supervision or helping a paraplanner compare charges.

Show promotions within the same employer so that the progression is visible. An “Administrator / Trainee Paraplanner” entry can work well when the first bullet gives the promotion date and the later bullets distinguish the technical work. If you are still considering broader office roles, the administrator CV example offers a different way to present service and organisational experience.

Shape senior and outsourced applications around judgement

For senior posts, add evidence of complex case discussions, technical review, mentoring and improvements to the advice process. Explain whether you allocated work, checked reports, trained colleagues or acted as a point of reference for advisers. Supporting a trainee and managing a team are distinct responsibilities worth describing clearly.

Outsourced paraplanners can show how they manage several practices, adapt to different report standards and maintain agreed turnaround times. Include the range of casework and the way you clarify instructions and resolve queries with advisers.

Career direction matters where it affects the fit. Some roles offer a route into advising; others are designed for people who want to deepen their technical paraplanning career. A short positive statement of your intended direction helps the employer understand why this particular position appeals. Keep the main CV focused on the experience and contribution that support that choice.

Paraplanner CV FAQs

Should I include a sample suitability report with my application?

Usually the CV and covering letter are enough unless the employer asks for a writing sample. If one is requested, a purpose-written case study using invented client circumstances can demonstrate structure, reasoning and clear explanations without sharing an existing client file. Ask what case type, length and assessment criteria the employer wants before preparing it.

Can I apply if I have worked in a restricted advice firm?

Yes, where your experience matches the role. Explain the products, planning areas and research responsibilities you have covered, then show how you analyse information and support recommendations. For an independent practice, experience comparing alternatives and learning new provider systems may be particularly useful. Your employment history should make the setting clear without allowing it to overshadow your technical contribution.

How should I show outsourced or contract paraplanning on my CV?

Give your business or contracting arrangement, dates and an overview of the practices and case types supported. Group similar short assignments under one entry, with selected examples of more substantial work. Describe volume, service arrangements and technical responsibility; client practice names can be omitted where your agreement requires confidentiality.

Does a paraplanner CV need assets under management or sales figures?

Neither is essential. They may provide useful context if you supported a clearly defined client segment, but they are not the same as your own contribution. Case complexity, research quality, dependable turnaround, report review outcomes and support for advisers are often more informative measures for a paraplanning application.

Should I mention defined benefit pension work separately?

Yes, when it is relevant to the vacancy. Describe the precise part you played, such as gathering scheme information, preparing calculations or supporting a specialist's analysis, together with relevant qualifications or training. This helps the employer distinguish general pension experience from work within a specialist pension-transfer process.

Is it a disadvantage if I want to stay in paraplanning rather than become an adviser?

For a technical career post, that can be a strong fit. State your interest in developing complex case expertise, mentoring or technical leadership, supported by the work you already enjoy and perform well. Where a vacancy is specifically advertised as a trainee-adviser route, make sure that direction aligns with what you want from the role.
