How to write a cleaner CV

A cleaner’s CV should make it easy to picture the work you can take on. The type of building, the areas you clean, the equipment you use and the way you maintain standards are more useful than a long list of personal qualities. Put that practical evidence near the top, alongside any availability that is particularly relevant to the advertised shift.

Helen’s example combines office and school cleaning. Her employment entries show the scale of her allocated areas, routine work, checks and responsibilities beyond the cleaning itself. An application for a hospital, shopping centre or private household will need a different emphasis, even where many of the basic tasks overlap.

Lead with the cleaning experience that fits the site

Use your profile to identify your relevant setting and strongest practical skills. “Cleaner with seven years’ experience in commercial offices and a primary school” is a useful opening because the employer immediately knows where Helen has worked. The following lines add site schedules, equipment training and keyholding responsibilities.

If the vacancy is for an early-morning office cleaner, experience completing an allocated area before staff arrive deserves prominence. For a shopping centre, highlight cleaning around the public, responding to requests and coordinating with security or facilities colleagues. For a school, after-school routines, holiday cleaning and communication with the caretaker are likely to be more relevant.

Use the employer’s role title where it accurately describes the work you are seeking. Cleaner, cleaning operative and domestic assistant can involve similar duties, but the setting matters. A hospital domestic assistant’s experience should make clinical and non-clinical areas clear; a domestic cleaner working in private homes should describe household clients and the service provided.

Describe your allocated work, not just the building

Under each employer and date range, add a short sentence explaining the site, shift or team arrangement. Then describe the areas for which you were responsible. An employer gains a clearer picture from “cleaned six classrooms, adjoining corridors and designated washrooms” than from “responsible for school cleaning”.

Useful details include the number or type of rooms, the surfaces involved and whether the site was occupied while you worked. Choose the measures that suit the setting. A room count may help with offices; a regular round of communal stairwells may explain housing work; a combination of bedrooms and shared areas may suit a residential home.

Make team arrangements clear. Helen works in a four-person team across two buildings, then identifies her own allocated area. That gives a realistic sense of responsibility and helps the reader understand the workload. If you moved between sites or covered several colleagues’ areas, explain how that cover was organised.

Separate routine duties from periodic work when both are relevant. Daily washroom and floor cleaning, a weekly machine-cleaning programme and holiday deep cleans demonstrate different experience. A short bullet about preparing classrooms for reopening can add useful evidence without repeating the whole daily schedule.

Show how you maintain a good standard

Quality evidence can be simple. Describe completed checklists, supervisor inspections, client feedback, repeat bookings or responsibility for a trusted area. In Helen’s CV, the score from six monthly checks has a defined period and an identifiable source. A reader can understand what the figure represents.

Other achievements might include helping a new site settle into its cleaning routine, improving the handover to relief staff or organising supplies so that colleagues can replenish them reliably. Helen’s cupboard stock card is a small, practical improvement used at both sites. It fits the role and adds something beyond a list of tasks.

Where you have results from a formal audit, identify the measure and your area of responsibility. For a team result, explain what you contributed. Where there is no scored inspection, a clear account of the work and the checks used to maintain it can still be persuasive. Regular responsibility for keys, closing checks or preparing an area for the next day also helps demonstrate trust.

Name equipment and training in a useful way

Include the equipment that matters to the vacancy: commercial vacuums, walk-behind scrubber dryers, rotary machines, carpet extractors or specialist equipment used in your setting. Connect it to the work you performed, such as scheduled hard-floor care or periodic carpet cleaning. This lets the employer distinguish routine familiarity from more specialised experience.

Equipment care belongs in the employment history too. Preparing equipment for use, cleaning and storing it afterwards, identifying defects and reporting faults all demonstrate practical responsibility. If you helped new colleagues learn the site’s equipment arrangements, say how many people you supported and what you showed them.

Give relevant training its proper title and completion or refresher year. Workplace instruction in COSHH, manual handling, infection prevention or machinery operation can sit under “Training and education”. A formal cleaning qualification or assessed BICSc training can be listed separately with its full title and provider. Employer training has value in its own right; the reader mainly needs to understand what it covered.

A skills section can help bring important equipment and methods together, but the work history should show where you used them. Helen’s profile names the scrubber dryer and her current role explains its use for scheduled floor care.

Present safety and hygiene as part of the work

Choose examples that show how you follow the site’s arrangements. These may include colour-coded equipment, safe storage of products, use of warning signs, reporting damaged fittings or keeping access routes clear. A concrete responsibility is easier to assess than the phrase “excellent health and safety knowledge”.

For healthcare or care-home applications, include relevant infection-prevention training and the areas you cleaned. Experience of clinical areas, isolation or terminal cleans deserves clear identification where it formed part of your trained duties. For a care home, show how you arranged work around residents and respected their privacy and routines.

Waste handling can also vary considerably. Name the relevant experience, such as general waste, recycling or clinical waste, and place it in the setting where you gained it. The CV needs to show your familiarity with the work and site procedures; a detailed explanation of cleaning or waste-handling methods would take space away from that evidence.

Include the people and records involved

Cleaners often work independently while remaining part of a wider service. Explain who you communicate with and why: reporting defects to a caretaker, agreeing room access with office staff, handing over to the next shift or responding to a request from a member of the public.

Customer-facing experience is particularly useful in occupied buildings. A retail cleaner might help visitors find a facility while keeping the area usable; a residential cleaner may need to arrange access around residents. Helen’s school entry shows how she coordinated with after-school clubs, giving her communication skills a practical context.

Include digital tasks where they are part of the job. Smartphone task records, clocking systems, stock-ordering websites and electronic fault reports are all relevant. Name a system if the vacancy asks for it; otherwise a short description of what you recorded is sufficient. The CV should make your ability to follow instructions and pass on useful information apparent through your work.

Make hours, locations and overlapping jobs easy to follow

Cleaning vacancies often involve a specific working window. If your availability fits it, a brief line can remove uncertainty: for example, “Available for weekday evening shifts from 5pm”. For mobile roles, include a driving licence and access to transport where relevant, together with the area you can reasonably cover.

Several part-time cleaning jobs can run at the same time. List each employer with dates and, where helpful, the weekly hours or shift pattern. That makes the overlap understandable. For agency work involving many short assignments, one agency entry with the main types of site is often clearer than a separate full entry for every placement.

For self-employed cleaning, describe your regular client base and the services you provide. A small number of repeat household clients, keyholding arrangements, agreed schedules and handling enquiries can establish the scale and reliability of the work. Use a general description of the households or area rather than a list of private addresses.

Adapt the evidence to the next cleaning role

  • Offices and commercial premises: emphasise allocated areas, access arrangements, working around staff, scheduled floor care, stock and closing checks.
  • Schools: bring forward classrooms and pupil facilities, term-time routines, holiday cleaning, secure storage and communication with site staff.
  • Shopping centres and public spaces: show public-facing work, reactive requests, internal and external areas, waste and coordination with other site teams.
  • Healthcare and residential care: identify the setting, relevant hygiene training, local cleaning schedules and consideration for patients or residents.
  • Private homes: explain the agreed service, regular clients, access, care of household surfaces and organising a dependable round of visits.

If the vacancy includes guest-room presentation, linen and room readiness, the housekeeper CV example may help you select the most relevant evidence. Choose the emphasis from the actual duties, since employers can use cleaner and housekeeper titles differently.

Build a first cleaning CV from practical experience

For a first paid cleaning role, use relevant work from retail, hospitality, volunteering or another setting. Cleaning down work areas, following a closing checklist, replenishing supplies and reporting a hazard can all demonstrate useful habits. Explain the setting and responsibility rather than relying on “hardworking” or “attention to detail” alone.

Experience maintaining a home or helping a relative can also be relevant when clearly placed under an appropriate personal or voluntary experience heading. Keep the account focused on tasks that transfer to the vacancy, alongside any paid work, education and availability. An entry-level application can be concise and still provide a convincing picture of readiness to learn the site’s routines.

For an experienced cleaner moving towards a lead role, add evidence of allocating work, arranging cover, checking standards, reporting issues to a client or supporting new starters. Distinguish informal help from responsibility for a team so the reader can see the level at which you have worked.

This template gives recent cleaning experience most of the space and keeps earlier work and training easy to find. You can compare other layouts in the Word CV template library if a shorter employment history or a larger section on specialist cleaning would suit your application.

Cleaner CV FAQs

Can I use a CV for a school cleaning application?

Check the school’s application instructions. Some schools require their own form and do not accept a CV in its place. Your CV is still useful for assembling dates, duties, training and examples of relevant work. Transfer that evidence into the requested form and address any specific questions about the role.

How do I list a cleaning job when the contract changed hands?

Show the continuity of the site work and identify the employers with their respective dates. You might use one entry for the site, followed by a short note that employment transferred from one contractor to another. If your duties stayed broadly the same, one description can cover the work; add any promotion or change of responsibility separately.

Should a DBS check go on a cleaner CV?

For roles in England and Wales where it is relevant, a brief line stating the type of DBS check and date can be useful, along with Update Service membership if applicable. The recruiting employer will decide what check is needed for its particular role. Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate disclosure arrangements. Certificate details can be provided through the employer’s checking process.

What if I have used cleaning machines but have no separate certificate?

Describe the equipment, the work you used it for and any workplace instruction or supervised training you completed. For example, you could list employer training in scrubber-dryer operation under training and show its regular use in your employment history. A separate external certificate is only one way of recording relevant development.

Should I include photographs of my cleaning work?

For most employed cleaner roles, clear descriptions of sites, duties and standards are sufficient. Photographs may be more useful for a self-employed service or specialist restoration work when the client has agreed to their use. A small separate selection can support that application without making the main CV difficult to read.

Who can provide a reference for private-household cleaning?

A regular client who knows your work can be a useful referee, as can a former supervisor from another job. Choose someone able to discuss reliability, the service provided and the period they have known you. Agree this with them before sharing their contact details; you can provide the details when the employer asks for references.
