How to write a sales engineer CV
A sales engineer CV needs to explain both what you understand technically and how that understanding helps a customer buy the right solution. The balance differs between an industrial territory role, an internal quotations position and software pre-sales. Make your product area and part in the sales process clear before presenting results.
A hiring manager should be able to see the customers you work with, the technical decisions you help them make and the commercial responsibility you carry. A strong CV connects those three things through actual enquiries, proposals, demonstrations or accounts.
Define the type of sales engineering you do
Use the opening profile to establish your product domain, customer market and role. “Sales engineer supplying pumps and valves to industrial maintenance teams” gives a clear starting point. A software applicant might instead describe supporting enterprise account executives through discovery, demonstrations and technical evaluations.
Then show where your responsibility begins and ends. You may own a territory and close orders, prepare technically sound quotations for a sales manager, or lead the technical work while an account executive handles the commercial negotiation. All are useful forms of sales engineering; the reader needs to understand yours.
A short scope sentence under each employer can cover account numbers, territory, customer sectors and typical order or project size. For channel roles, identify whether you work through distributors, resellers or other partners. For direct sales, specify the people involved in the buying decision, such as maintenance engineers, technical directors, procurement teams or business sponsors.
Follow a customer requirement through to a decision
Select a few examples that show how you moved an opportunity forward. Start with the customer’s requirement, describe your technical contribution and finish with the next decision or result. This gives substance to claims such as consultative selling or problem-solving.
For industrial equipment, your contribution could include a site visit, review of duty conditions, drawing interpretation, selection with an applications engineer or comparison of options. Explain the particular issue you resolved: access, compatibility, maintenance needs, delivery time or an application requirement that affected the proposal.
A useful description might be: “Clarified a manufacturer’s cleaning and maintenance requirements, coordinated a revised valve specification with applications engineering and secured approval for a line trial.” This shows the technical work and the stage reached. A later bullet could describe the order or rollout if that followed.
For software pre-sales, the equivalent may be discovery with developers and business owners, mapping an integration requirement, building a demonstration or answering architecture questions. Use the same chain of requirement, contribution and decision, with enough technical detail for someone in that market to recognise the challenge.
Make demonstrations and evaluations count as evidence
“Delivered product demos” says little about the quality of the work. Explain who the demonstration was for, how it was tailored and what it established. A workshop for end users, a trial with a production team and a technical evaluation for enterprise architects each call for different preparation.
In software roles, describe the use case and the evaluation criteria behind a proof of concept or proof of value. You might show how you built a workflow, tested an API integration or demonstrated a reporting requirement. A sentence about the customer’s acceptance or the technical questions resolved makes the exercise commercially meaningful.
In equipment sales, a demonstration may involve product selection, test arrangements and coordination with a customer’s site team. State your role in the preparation and follow-up, especially where the demonstration changed the specification or allowed the customer to progress to an order.
Training can be just as relevant. Helping distributor sales staff recognise suitable applications, or briefing a customer’s operators on a product, demonstrates that you can make technical information usable. Include the audience, subject and practical purpose.
Show the commercial thinking in quotations and proposals
A technically suitable solution still needs a workable offer. If quotations are a substantial part of your role, show the decisions you handle: selecting components, obtaining supplier prices, estimating scope, clarifying exclusions, checking lead times or coordinating pricing approval.
State whether you prepare the technical response, build the costed quotation, negotiate terms or support a colleague who owns those stages. For requests for quotation or proposal, give the product or project context and the complexity that made your contribution valuable. A specification-heavy enquiry with several suppliers is different from a routine replacement order.
Quote values and turnaround times can help establish scale. Include the period or sample behind a result so that the reader can interpret it. An improvement from six working days to four across standard quotations is more informative than “improved efficiency”. If your experience is mainly bespoke work, scope accuracy and successful handover may tell the stronger story.
For a role centred on internal enquiries and order coordination, the sales administrator example offers related ways to present quotation tracking and order accuracy. Your sales engineer CV should also make the technical judgement within that work visible.
Choose results that match your responsibility
For an account-owning sales engineer, useful measures include orders booked against target, new-account sales, repeat business, margin performance and the development of a territory. Give the period and distinguish orders from invoiced revenue, pipeline or recurring contract value. The example CV reports 2025 bookings against a territory target, then gives the first-year orders from new accounts.
If you share opportunities with an account executive, explain the technical work you led and the outcome achieved by the team. For example, “Led the integration evaluation and technical response for three successful enterprise opportunities, supporting £X in annual recurring revenue” makes both the contribution and the value understandable.
Results can also sit earlier in the sales cycle. Customer acceptance of an evaluation, a technically approved specification, improved quotation turnaround or fewer clarification rounds may be the most relevant evidence in a support role. A technical milestone and a signed order are different outcomes; naming the stage gives each its proper significance.
Use conversion figures with a clear starting point. Enquiries converted to orders, qualified opportunities closed and completed trials accepted measure different parts of the process. For long sales cycles, a short account of an important opportunity can communicate more than a percentage covering a handful of deals.
Explain account, territory and partner work
Describe the market you cover in a way that makes its demands recognisable. A regional portfolio of established maintenance customers differs from developing new OEM accounts or supporting a network of distributors. Account numbers, sectors, travel coverage and typical buying cycles all provide useful context.
For existing customers, show how you identified further applications or kept relationships productive through technical and delivery issues. For new business, give the route into the account: targeted visits, referrals, events, specification work or collaboration with a partner. Connect the activity to an opportunity or result where possible.
Distributor experience deserves its own detail. Training partner staff, joining end-user visits, helping qualify enquiries and coordinating a joint account plan show how you support sales through another organisation. This can be more relevant than a general statement about managing relationships.
When a target role places greater weight on prospecting and account growth, the business development manager CV provides further ideas for presenting that responsibility. Keep the product and application expertise alongside the commercial evidence.
Show what happens after the customer says yes
A good handover is valuable sales-engineering experience. Describe how you pass the accepted scope, specifications, assumptions, documentation and delivery requirements to engineering, operations or implementation colleagues. This helps an employer see that the offer can be delivered as agreed.
For manufactured products, relevant evidence might include reviewing a purchase order against the quotation, coordinating an inspection requirement or clarifying a commissioning query. In software, it could involve scoping services, briefing an implementation consultant or carrying technical decisions from the evaluation into onboarding.
Customer feedback can also demonstrate influence beyond an individual sale. Give an example of an application issue or recurring request you brought to product management, and the change it informed. This shows commercial awareness grounded in customer use.
Present technical depth without losing the reader
Organise technical skills around the products and work you handle. Industrial applicants may need equipment families, application knowledge, drawings, selection tools and relevant testing experience. Software applicants may need platforms, APIs, integrations, cloud services or the programming used to build demonstrations. Choose the details that support your target market.
Explain the purpose of sales systems as well. Salesforce or another CRM is useful evidence when you describe maintaining technical actions, qualification details and forecasts. A CPQ system belongs with configuration and quotation work; an ERP or MRP system belongs with order review and delivery coordination.
Use your experience section to show depth. A short skills list helps scanning, while a specific project or customer example demonstrates how you apply that knowledge. Product training and relevant qualifications can sit together near the end of an experienced CV.
Make a move from engineering or support feel coherent
If you are moving into your first sales engineer role, draw attention to the customer-facing parts of your technical work. Site discussions, explaining faults, recommending options, demonstrating equipment and producing information for quotations all help establish the connection.
The example CV uses field service experience to explain the move into industrial sales. It shows customer discussions and proposal support alongside hands-on work, so the progression is easy to follow. A software developer or support engineer can make a similar connection through requirements workshops, technical presentations and customer troubleshooting.
For graduate or junior applications, relevant placements and projects can demonstrate numerical reasoning, product understanding and clear communication. Describe a requirement you investigated, the options you considered and how you presented the result. Customer-service work can add evidence of responsiveness and handling enquiries alongside your technical education.
As you gain sales-engineering experience, bring recent customers, proposals and results forward. Earlier technical work can become shorter while still explaining the foundation of your product knowledge.
Sales Engineer CV FAQs
It depends on the product and employer. Some roles ask for a relevant degree, while others accept HNC/HND, technical apprenticeships, other engineering qualifications or equivalent experience. Software pre-sales may place more weight on platform knowledge and customer-facing technical work. Put the qualification and experience that establish your technical foundation together so the recruiter can see how you meet the particular requirements.
Your sales performance and responsibility are generally more useful than your pay arrangement. Use the space for targets, results, territory or technical contribution. Salary expectations, commission structure and on-target earnings can be discussed in the recruitment process or supplied in a requested application field.
Percentages against target, approximate ranges, account growth or technical milestones can provide useful context. For example, you could state annual target attainment and the type of customer portfolio without disclosing exact prices or client names. Choose measures that still let the reader understand your scale and contribution.
A short, accessible demonstration can be useful for software pre-sales, particularly when it shows how you explain a use case rather than just navigate a product. A concise project or application summary may be more suitable for industrial sales. Treat either as supporting evidence: the CV should already explain your experience, and a portfolio is not a universal requirement for sales engineering.
State the territories or customer groups you have supported, the language used and the work you carried out in it. Delivering a technical presentation, negotiating a specification and handling routine correspondence require different levels of fluency, so describe the activity. Include willingness to travel or regional coverage where it helps the employer assess the practical fit for the vacancy.
