How to write a financial accountant CV
A financial accountant CV should make it easy to understand which accounts you take responsibility for, the reporting framework you work within and how you bring the numbers to a reliable conclusion. The strongest evidence often sits in work that happens before a statement is issued: resolving a reconciliation, establishing the treatment of a transaction, obtaining supporting information and taking a set of accounts through review.
Start with the kind of financial accounting role you want. A subsidiary accountant preparing reporting packs, a technical accountant advising on complex transactions and a public-sector accountant producing annual accounts may share a title while needing quite different CVs. Give the most space to the responsibilities that connect your experience with the proposed role.
Establish your reporting responsibilities early
Your profile can establish qualification status, relevant sector experience and the reporting work you handle in three or four sentences. “Qualified accountant with excellent attention to detail” leaves the reader to discover almost everything else. A more informative opening could describe an ACCA-qualified accountant responsible for three companies’ month-end and statutory reporting, with experience of FRS 102 accounts and external audit coordination.
Follow this with a short context sentence under each recent job. Include the number and type of entities, the scale of the business and your place in the finance team. Three trading companies with overseas transactions present different accounting demands from a single UK service company, even if turnover is similar. A reporting deadline, central finance structure or shared-service arrangement can explain the complexity more effectively than a large revenue figure alone.
Make the boundaries of your role easy to follow. Preparing accounts for a controller’s review is substantial responsibility. Reviewing subsidiaries’ submissions, producing a group consolidation and approving journals are different responsibilities, each worth describing in its own right.
Show what happens between the ledger and the accounts
“Responsible for month-end” is a useful starting point, but it needs a little detail. Select the parts of the close that demonstrate your level: accruals and prepayments, fixed assets, payroll control accounts, intercompany balances, foreign-currency revaluation, tax balances or the final trial balance review. Explain whether you prepare, review or coordinate them and how they feed into the reporting timetable.
For balance sheet work, go beyond the word “reconciliations”. The employer needs to see how you investigate differences and bring outstanding items to a conclusion. A bullet might describe matching bank receipts to a clearing account, agreeing intercompany differences with another entity or resolving an aged payroll-control balance with the payroll team. Include the consequence where useful: a cleared backlog, a corrected opening balance or a repeat issue removed from the next close.
In the example CV, the reduction in items aged over 90 days has a defined starting point, end point and period. The explanation also shows how Aisha achieved it: named owners and investigation of posting issues. That combination says more about her control of the balance sheet than an unsupported description such as “highly accurate”.
Give statutory accounts and audit work their own evidence
Describe the accounts you produce and how far you take them. This may include drafting primary statements, preparing cash flow workings, completing disclosures, tying the accounts to the final ledger or assembling the schedules that support particular notes. Where an external firm prepares the final accounts, explain the pack and review work you own internally.
Audit experience is stronger when the reader can see your contribution to the process. “Liaised with auditors” could mean forwarding requests or coordinating the entire engagement. More precise evidence includes organising the deliverables timetable, preparing the fixed asset and lease schedules, managing queries with colleagues, evaluating proposed adjustments or presenting unresolved accounting matters to the controller.
An achievement might concern submitting the first complete accounts draft on the agreed date, reducing repeat requests for missing evidence or closing a recurring control recommendation. Give the relevant reporting period and your contribution. The external audit opinion is the auditor’s conclusion; your CV can focus on the quality and readiness of the work you delivered.
If your role includes corporation-tax information, VAT or other returns, specify the stage you handle. Preparing tax packs for advisers, reviewing computations and submitting a return each demonstrate a different level of involvement. This is especially useful in smaller organisations where the same accountant covers several reporting obligations.
Present accounting standards through the work you did
A technical skills section can identify FRS 102, IFRS or another relevant framework. The employment section should then explain where you used it. Revenue recognition, lease accounting, provisions, impairment and deferred tax are useful subjects when they form a meaningful part of your experience. Choose the transactions and judgements most relevant to the vacancy.
For example, a CV bullet could describe reviewing service contracts and documenting the revenue treatment for the controller, or assessing lease data and preparing transition workings for a change in reporting requirements. State the output: a technical paper, journal calculation, disclosure, updated policy or agreed accounting treatment. This lets the reader assess your practical depth without turning the CV into an explanation of the standard.
Keep the reporting context clear when you work with more than one framework. UK statutory accounts under FRS 102 and an IFRS group pack can belong to the same job. Explain the adjustments or reconciliations you prepare between them. The frameworks have differences, so naming both alongside their uses is more informative than grouping everything under “international accounting”.
Changes in standards can also provide useful project evidence. For FRS 102 lease and revenue changes, relevant CV material might include gathering contract data, assessing scope, preparing calculations or updating disclosures. The Financial Reporting Council’s factsheets provide background on the requirements; the CV should concentrate on your contribution to applying them.
Be precise about group reporting and consolidation
Multi-entity experience deserves detail because it can mean very different things. Identify whether you maintain several companies’ ledgers, prepare their group submissions, reconcile intercompany balances or produce the consolidated statements. Mention relevant currencies, reporting deadlines and entity types where these explain the difficulty of the work.
For a consolidation role, useful evidence includes reviewing subsidiary packs, processing eliminations, handling foreign-currency translation, reconciling movements in reserves or preparing consolidated cash flow workings. If you have worked through an acquisition, disposal or group reorganisation, describe the particular schedules or accounting work you delivered.
A candidate who prepares subsidiary packs can still make a strong application for a broader group role. Show the quality of those submissions, your understanding of the group’s policies and the queries you resolve with the consolidation team. That gives the employer a clear basis for judging the next step in your progression.
Explain systems improvements in accounting terms
Put the finance systems you use in a compact skills section, then connect the most important ones to actual work. Sage 200, NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Dynamics or Xero are useful search terms when relevant to the vacancy. Your examples should reveal whether you use them for journals and reporting, maintain finance data, test changes or support an implementation.
For Excel, identify the tasks behind the proficiency label. Power Query can support repeatable imports and reconciliations; PivotTables can help investigate movements; lookup and aggregation formulas can support account mapping and exception checks. A bullet explaining how you made an intercompany pack quicker to prepare is stronger than a long inventory of functions.
Where you improve a process, include how the output remained dependable. A reconciliation rebuilt with source-total checks, a documented review stage and a handover to another accountant shows more than speed alone. For an ERP migration, useful evidence might be opening-balance reconciliation, chart-of-accounts mapping, parallel reporting or resolution of testing issues.
Choose results that show a dependable reporting process
Financial accounting achievements do not all need to be savings. They can show a better close, clearer evidence, fewer unresolved balances or a reporting process that other people can use consistently. Suitable measures include:
- The number or value of aged reconciling items resolved, with the time period.
- The change in the date a complete reporting pack reached review.
- Hours released from a recurring preparation task, alongside the checks retained.
- Completion of a defined reporting or system-change milestone.
- The scope of accounts, disclosures or control documentation brought up to date.
Explain what changed and why it matters. “Moved fixed asset reconciliation from day seven to day four by agreeing a monthly disposal report with operations” links the outcome to a practical action. Where a number would add little, describe the finished result: a documented accounting position accepted at review or a reconciled opening balance for a newly acquired company.
Show how you obtain information and resolve disagreements
Financial reporting relies on people outside the accounting team. You may need project managers to confirm completion dates, procurement to provide contracts, HR to explain payroll movements or overseas finance teams to resolve differences. Pick an example that shows how you obtained the right information in time for reporting.
Technical communication is equally valuable. Describe a paper that set out an accounting issue for senior review, a briefing that helped colleagues provide more useful evidence or a discussion that resolved differing interpretations of a transaction. These examples demonstrate judgement and communication together.
At senior level, include the review and development work behind a reliable team: reviewing reconciliations, coaching junior accountants, allocating year-end deliverables and covering critical reporting responsibilities. State team size where useful, while giving equal weight to what you helped the team deliver.
Moving from practice or progressing towards qualification
For a move from audit into industry, translate your client experience into the reporting work the employer needs. Relevant sectors, accounting frameworks, balance sheet areas, accounts preparation and discussions with finance teams deserve prominence. Explain progression from testing individual sections to leading fieldwork or reviewing others’ work. Distinguishing audit work from preparation work helps the recruiter understand the experience you will bring into an internal finance team.
For an assistant financial accountant, the strongest evidence may be ownership of particular reconciliations, preparation of journals, fixed asset maintenance and the schedules you contribute to year-end. Show which responsibilities have expanded as your studies and experience have developed. The accounts assistant CV example is also useful if most of your experience is still in ledger work and you are building towards broader accounting responsibilities.
Put your qualification and status where they are easy to find: ACA or ACCA membership, CIMA qualification, AAT, current study stage or another relevant route. Give the qualification or membership date; for studies in progress, show completed stages and the next planned milestone. An expected completion date can help the employer understand timing. Relevant CPD belongs in a short development section, particularly when it connects to recent accounting changes or the role’s reporting requirements.
For public-sector or not-for-profit applications, bring forward the reporting framework, accounts or returns and governance responsibilities you have actually handled. Evidence of a complex year-end or clear technical advice can also support a move between sectors. Where the application includes a supporting statement, use that space to develop examples against the stated criteria while keeping the CV as a clear account of your career and reporting responsibilities.

CV FAQs
It depends on the vacancy. Some employers accept ACA, ACCA or CIMA; others specify particular qualifications or membership of a CCAB body. Read the essential criteria and make your relevant financial reporting experience prominent. If the qualification wording is unclear, a short enquiry to the recruiter can establish whether your route is accepted before you prepare a detailed application.
Give each assignment its employer or client, dates, contract status and reporting purpose. Lead with what you completed: a statutory accounts cycle, consolidation, audit handover or reconciliation recovery. Similar assignments can sit under an interim accounting heading, with separate dated entries. This makes a planned sequence of contracts easy to understand and preserves the evidence of different systems and reporting environments.
Sector, turnover range, entity structure and the work performed usually provide enough context. For example, describing an owner-managed manufacturer with overseas sales can explain your exposure to inventory and foreign-currency balances without naming the client. Use employer names for your own career history and describe your client portfolio in terms that help the recruiter assess its relevance.
Keep the contractual job title and add a short descriptive line, such as “Company Accountant — statutory reporting and balance sheet control”. Then show the reporting responsibilities in the opening sentence and bullets. This preserves a straightforward career record while helping a recruiter recognise experience that matches a financial accountant vacancy.
These are not normally needed with the initial CV. A concise description of the accounts or technical paper, your contribution and the review outcome is usually sufficient. If an employer requests a work sample, agree the format and use material you are able to share, or prepare a self-contained case study using synthetic information. Follow any separate instructions for a technical exercise.
