  • Manage one executive and commission freelance video creators within a £36,000 annual content budget, coordinating briefs, deliverables and approvals.

  • Review weekly channel results, adjust the content mix and maintain response guidance with customer care for product queries and delivery issues.

Selected results:

  • Introduced a practical room-styling video series; median organic Instagram saves per post rose from 34 to 61 across the next three monthly reporting periods.
  • Led social for a six-week spring campaign generating 1,420 tagged website sessions and 96 email sign-ups attributed to those sessions in GA4.

Social Media Executive / Assistant | Sep 2019 – Mar 2023

North Street Creative | Manchester

How to write a social media manager CV

A social media manager CV needs to show the thinking and responsibility behind the posts. Employers want to understand the audience you served, the decisions you made, the content you delivered and what changed as a result. A portfolio can show the creative work; the CV explains why that work mattered and what you contributed.

The title covers quite different jobs. One manager may own an organic content calendar and community inbox, another may lead creators and an agency, and a third may specialise in paid campaigns. Read the vacancy for that balance before choosing which achievements to lead with. The downloadable example combines organic channel ownership with hands-on production and some paid social experience.

Define your scope before listing platforms

Make your profile specific about the work you manage. Include the type of organisation or clients, your strongest channels and the responsibilities most relevant to the vacancy. An in-house consumer-brand role might emphasise content planning, creator relationships and customer care. A B2B role could give more prominence to LinkedIn, employee advocacy, subject-matter interviews and qualified website traffic.

Use the opening lines of each employment entry to establish scale: the brands or client accounts, the markets covered, whether you had direct reports and the resources you controlled. “Managed organic content for four hospitality clients, coordinating venue teams and a freelance videographer” creates a clearer picture than “managed multiple social media accounts”.

Separate different kinds of ownership. Running the channels, supervising an executive, briefing an agency and personally editing video are all valuable, but they tell an employer different things about your experience. Name them where they occurred. For a management vacancy, the reader should be able to see both your judgement and how you organised other people’s work.

Turn campaigns into evidence of your decisions

Select campaigns that demonstrate the requirements of the new role. A product launch can show cross-team planning and creator coordination; a continuing educational series can show audience insight and sustained editorial judgement; a regional campaign can show how you adapted a central brief for a different audience.

A strong campaign bullet links the objective, your contribution and the outcome. For example: “Developed a six-week content series around common product questions, briefing two creators and coordinating tracked landing pages with ecommerce; the campaign brought 1,420 tagged website sessions and 96 attributed email sign-ups.” The detail explains both delivery and measurement.

You can then use the portfolio to show the content and expand on the choices: why those formats suited the audience, what you changed after the first results, and how the next campaign developed. The CV should carry the main evidence even if the recruiter does not open the portfolio immediately.

Choose a range that reflects your contribution rather than filling the page with your largest numbers. A carefully improved recurring series, a sensitive community response and a well-delivered launch may demonstrate more breadth than three viral posts.

Explain platform-specific creative work

“Created social content” can mean writing captions, filming, editing, commissioning, presenting on camera or approving finished assets. State which parts you handled. If you briefed a production partner, the brief, feedback and final quality control are your evidence. If you shot and edited the content yourself, name that work and the relevant tools.

Give enough format detail to show that your experience is practical. Short-form video, Stories, carousels, LinkedIn document posts and live event coverage each involve different editorial choices. An entry such as “Adapted customer interviews into short-form video and LinkedIn document posts, with separate hooks and copy for each channel” shows more than a list of platform logos.

For video-heavy roles, include examples of turning a brief into a workable shoot: planning shots, preparing contributors, capturing footage, editing and arranging approvals. For a role focused on copy and brand voice, prioritise examples of adapting messages for different audiences. Our copywriter CV offers another way to present writing-led campaign contributions.

Trend awareness is stronger when attached to a judgement. Explain how you selected a relevant format or audience conversation and adapted it to the brand. This shows an employer how you decide what belongs on a channel, as well as your awareness of what is happening there.

Give performance figures their context

Match the measure to the objective. Reach and video viewing can help explain awareness work; saves, shares or meaningful responses can help explain the usefulness of content; tagged website visits, enquiries, sign-ups or purchases can help explain action beyond the platform. Follower growth becomes more informative when the reader knows the starting audience, period and reason that audience mattered.

Distinguish organic results from paid or boosted distribution. If paid support materially shaped the result, include the spend or describe the support. For percentage changes, give a baseline where it helps the reader interpret scale. The example CV’s movement from 34 to 61 median saves per organic post is clearer than an unexplained “79% improvement in engagement”.

Engagement rate needs a definition because teams and tools calculate it differently. On the CV, a short phrase such as “engagements as a percentage of reach” may be enough; the portfolio can carry the fuller calculation and reporting period. Similarly, clarify whether a video figure describes views, completion rate or average watch time.

Where results come from an analytics or advertising attribution report, identify them that way: “GA4-attributed sign-ups” or “platform-reported purchases”. This gives the employer useful context about the measurement. If social was part of a wider campaign, connect your contribution to the team result and explain the evidence available for the social element.

A useful reporting achievement includes the decision that followed. Did you shift resources towards a stronger recurring format, revise the creative brief, change the publishing mix or stop an ineffective series? Reporting to a senior stakeholder becomes more persuasive when your CV shows how the discussion affected the next round of work.

Keep paid social experience distinct and visible

For a role with paid-media responsibility, explain whether you built and managed campaigns yourself, supplied creative to a specialist or oversaw an agency. Include the platforms, campaign objectives and scale of budget. Keep advertising spend separate from creator fees or a content-production budget so the reader can understand the responsibility.

Hands-on paid social evidence might cover campaign setup, audience selection, creative tests, budget pacing and performance reviews. Choose the part that shows your contribution most clearly. A test described with its objective and result is more useful than “optimised campaigns”. If you supplied the creative rather than managed the media account, explain how your revisions supported the test.

For a paid specialist vacancy, cost per lead, cost per acquisition or return on ad spend may deserve prominence, alongside the attribution basis and campaign context. For an organic role, paid collaboration can remain a shorter supporting detail. Your CV should reflect the balance of the position you are seeking.

Show the work behind community management and brand judgement

Community management includes more than replying to comments. Describe the audiences and channels you covered, how you worked with customer care or communications, and what responsibility you held for escalations. Response guidance, recurring-question reporting and weekend event cover can all be valuable evidence.

If social listening led to a change, make that connection explicit. You may have identified a repeated product misunderstanding, briefed a clearer explanation and reduced follow-up questions. In a B2B setting, listening might have informed a webinar topic or helped a technical expert answer a concern. These examples show how audience conversations influenced the organisation.

For reputation-sensitive work, explain your role in approvals, response coordination or monitoring. A concise description of the issue type and the teams involved is enough for the CV. The emphasis should stay on your judgement and delivery.

Relevant experience of advertising disclosures, accessibility checks, content permissions or a sector’s approval process can sit in the same part of the work history. Describe what you reviewed or coordinated. For example, “Built caption and accessibility checks into the video approval process” gives a recruiter something concrete to assess.

Make creator, agency and team management tangible

Creator work can involve researching suitable partners, assessing audience fit, writing briefs, agreeing deliverables, coordinating usage arrangements and evaluating the finished content. Select the stages you owned. The number of partnerships matters less than whether the reader understands your responsibility and the purpose of the activity.

For agency management, include the scope of the brief, budget or retained support, and how you reviewed quality and performance. For line management, give the number and roles of direct reports, then an example of how you developed their work. Coaching an executive through planning and reporting is different from distributing tasks during a launch.

Cross-team work also deserves a concrete example. Coordinating product availability with ecommerce, securing technical approval before publication or aligning a creator launch with PR shows how you keep campaigns workable. These details help distinguish a manager from an experienced individual content producer.

Build a portfolio that makes your contribution easy to see

Link to a small, well-chosen collection of case studies near your contact details or in a portfolio section. Use a straightforward web page or a clearly organised PDF, with viewing access ready for the recruiter. A public brand profile can support the application, but a case study explains which work was yours and what happened during your time on the account.

For each selected project, include the brief and audience, your role, a few representative assets and the outcome. Show enough process to explain your thinking: a content-plan extract, a brief, an alternative creative treatment or a reporting recommendation. This is particularly useful where a designer, videographer or media buyer also contributed.

For collaborative work, identify your part alongside the other contributors. If client details are restricted, an anonymised account description, approved extracts and a discussion of the approach can still demonstrate the work. Where nothing can be shared publicly, state that a relevant selection is available on request and prepare it in an appropriate format.

Keep access simple. A visible link is useful even if you also include a QR code. The portfolio should open on a phone and make the strongest, most relevant work easy to locate.

Select tools and training that support the evidence

Group tools by their use: publishing and inbox management, listening, production, paid media and reporting. Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Buffer or Sprinklr mean more when linked to planning, approvals, community work or reports. Canva, CapCut or Adobe tools belong alongside the types of content you produced.

A marketing, communications or related degree can be included with its institution and date. Relevant platform training and practical courses can show continuing development. Use the exact course or certification name and completion date so the reader can distinguish coursework from an assessed credential.

For experienced applicants, recent work will usually carry more weight than a long catalogue of introductory courses. Give training space when it supports the vacancy, such as paid campaign measurement, video production, accessibility or leadership. If a role asks about AI-supported workflows, explain the useful task you incorporated into your process and how you reviewed the output.

Show readiness for your next level

If you are moving from executive to manager, highlight planning decisions, campaign ownership, stakeholder presentations and support for colleagues. A formal direct report is one form of management experience; owning a calendar, budget or agency relationship can also demonstrate readiness, provided the scope is clear.

For an early-career application, a society, charity, local business or personal project can supply relevant evidence. Give it a project heading and explain the audience, objective, work and result. A small account with a clear editorial purpose and thoughtful reporting can show useful judgement. Our marketing assistant CV may help if your experience is still spread across several marketing activities.

Freelancers can group projects under a self-employed entry and give selected clients or sectors their own short descriptions. Include the duration and your responsibilities so the reader can distinguish a one-off content shoot from an ongoing channel-management contract. Choose a design from the CV template library that leaves room for this evidence as well as a clear portfolio link.

Social Media Manager CV FAQs

Do I need a large personal following to get a social media manager job?

A large personal following is not the same as experience managing a brand. Employers can assess audience understanding, creative work, reporting and campaign responsibility through client, employer or project evidence. Include a personal account when it demonstrates relevant work, but its size does not need to be the centre of your application.

What if an account I managed has changed since I left?

Use dated screenshots or approved extracts in a case study and state the period you worked on the account. A live profile shows its current content, which may no longer represent your contribution. Put the main achievement and dates on your CV so the evidence remains understandable even if a platform post is later removed.

Can I include a campaign that missed its target?

It can be useful when it demonstrates a strong diagnosis and a worthwhile subsequent decision. The CV might focus on the improvement you made after identifying the problem, while the portfolio explains the original objective, result and learning. This is particularly relevant to roles involving testing, budget decisions or candid performance discussions with clients.

How do I present results when I cannot access the analytics any more?

Use figures retained in approved reports, appraisals or portfolio records, with their original period and context. If those are unavailable, describe the campaign responsibility, content produced, approvals managed and changes adopted. A detailed account of the work can still be useful evidence; the portfolio can focus on accessible creative samples and your decisions.

Should my CV be as creative as my social content?

Let the portfolio carry the richer visual work. On the CV, a clear hierarchy, restrained use of colour and readable job entries help the recruiter compare your experience with the vacancy. The downloadable design provides visual character while leaving the campaign results, responsibilities and qualifications easy to find.

Can I apply for a manager role without having line-managed anyone?

Some social media manager roles manage channels and campaigns rather than employees. Read the responsibilities for the actual requirement. Where the vacancy includes direct reports, show relevant preparation such as mentoring, briefing freelancers, reviewing work or coordinating a campaign team, alongside the channel or budget ownership you already have.

How should I describe managing several countries or languages?

Name the markets and explain how the work was divided. You may have owned a central calendar, adapted assets with local teams or coordinated translation and approval. State your own language proficiency separately. A short example of changing the content or timing for a particular market helps show the judgement behind international coordination.
